As a clean and efficient energy conversion device, fuel cells are widely used in energy, transportation and other industries. Their stability, service life and durability have always been the focus of industry attention. Reverse polarity, as a phenomenon that causes hydrogen fuel cell stack failure, has gradually become one of the focuses of related industries.

● Definition and hazards of reverse polarity

Reverse polarity is a phenomenon in which the output voltage of a fuel cell changes from positive to negative during operation. During the operation of the battery, when the fuel and oxidant are sufficient and effectively introduced into the battery, the electrochemical oxidation of the anode hydrogen fuel and the electrochemical reduction of the cathode oxygen will continue. However, factors such as start-stop, load change, operating errors and external environment can easily cause insufficient supply of anode fuel or cathode oxidant. When the gas shortage occurs, the working current of the battery will turn to drive the reverse polarity reaction in the anode or cathode, which will cause the battery output to become negative pressure.
The reverse polarity will generate huge heat, which is easy to cause pinholes in the proton membrane and cause a short circuit, which will cause irreversible attenuation of the fuel cell and even lead to catastrophic accidents. Therefore, anti-reverse polarity performance is the focus of fuel cell research and development, design, production and manufacturing.

● NGI Solution

NGI has been deeply involved in hydrogen fuel cell testing for many years. The N62400 series of ultra-low voltage and high current electronic loads launched by NGI can be used for fuel cell reverse polarity testing. It supports up to -3V@2160A load, which can meet the characteristic test of the full range of operating voltage points of a single fuel cell.
